BLUR BACKGROUND | 2026
Digital Stills Series - JPG, 2702 x 2097px
This work was captured in the early-morning intimacy of Flynn’s bed using Google Meet. The artist recorded themself reciting poetry, utilizing the functions “blur background” and “automated subtitles”. The real-time “blur” feature identifies pixels associated with the human body and automatically obscures the surrounding space. As Flynn captured partial views of their body among the bed sheets, the blur activated with a noticeable uncertainty. This abstraction was further heightened by the “subtitles”, which transcribed their speech without context—rendering “T” (testosterone) as “tea” and “raw” as “roar.”
Furthermore, Flynn sought to harness Google Meet as a portal into the private interior of the home. By situating the work within this digitally mediated domestic space, the artist aimed to interrogate the relationship between visibility, intimacy, and technological spectatorship. Focusing on the deeply personal act of self-pleasure, Flynn’s objective was to utilise these tools to bring visibility to the subject of pleasure among fem-assigned individuals—an experience that has historically been stigmatized, marginalized, and obscured from public discourse.
